College Magazine Step by Step

 Original

The first thing I did to my photo was to crop the size so it would fit onto an A4 piece of paper.
For the first official step of editing my photo I increased the saturation, so the colours in the photo are more vibrant and stand out slightly, but not a huge amount so the photo looks unnatural.
I then increased the brightness and the contrast of the image so the lighting of the image looks professional. I increased the brightness to 6 and the contrast to 9, so the lighting looks even throughout the image.
For the third step I increased the amount of highlights in the photo and kept the amount of shadow in the image at 0.

I then stopped editing the image and started to add the main conventions of a magazine. The first convention I added was the mast head. The font I used was Shree Devanagari Bold in Italic with the text size of 140pt, I used this font as it looks modern and would appeal to college students as they would be used to modern looking items and magazines living in this day and age.
I then used an inner glow at a 3% distance, and a drop shadow at 3% distance and 33% opacity to bring the writing away from the page slightly.

I then added wrote the coverline of "Tap in on all of the latest college news". I used the font of Source sans pro light italic in the font size of 24pt. I put the coverline just underneath the title in a smaller font, the coverline gives a little bit of information of what the magazine is about, along with the title.

I then added a issue number and a date so the consumer would know they were reading the up to date version. I used the font of Source sand pro light italic in the font size of 14pt.
I then added a coverline to the bottom of the magazine that relates to the picture on the front of the magazine. Using the font size again of 30pt in bold italic with the font Shree Devanagari 714 bold. I wrote this all in capitals so it stands out, and grabs the audiences attention.
I then added another coverline to the magazine with a font of Shree Devanagari 714 bold, I made the title of the coverline large at the font size of 36pt so it grabs the consumer's attention and then the information I made a font size of 18pt as it is less important but, if the headline grabs the audience's attention they may now want to know a small amount of what the headline is actually about.

I then added a third coverline in the font of Shree Devanagari 714 bold, in bold italic in the size of 36pt. This coverline is a puff as it entices the audience in as they will be getting a free gift, or something free like a poster etc. In this puff I said there would be a free amazon voucher which would make the audience more likely to buy the magazine as they get something out of it.
I then added one last coverline with a bold title to it and then a smaller description underneath to give a small amount of information about the coverline.

I then made finishing touches to my magazine to make it look as professional as possible. I moved one cover line over to the right hand side of the magazine in more of a block so the front image would look more framed, and he coverline would be easily recognisable.
This is then my final magazine cover, the main theme of the magazine is photography as it is on the main front cover image and there is a main headline about photography that would be in the magazine, this means that the audience would easily be able to recognise the sub genre of the magazine which is photography. The main  target audience for my magazine would be college students (16-18) of both genders as my main colour scheme is versatile and modern which would appeal to the modern day youths.

To improve next time, I would need to take an image at a portrait orientation, so when making the magazine front cover I won't have to manipulate the size of the image too much, and make the image look unnatural.

College Magazine Annotaitons

Photoshop : Test Magazine

For this task I had to practice making a magazine front cover using an image provided by Moodle. The image I chose was this black and white image, I chose this one because I wanted my genre of magazine to be fashion but high end. This image looks high end as it is in black and white which suggests sophistication and the image is daring and rebellious.

Photoshop : Cutout

          Before                                                                               After

For this task we had to find an image on google and cut out the background so the person in the foreground of the photo is isolated. To do this I used the polygonal lasso tool, this allows you to crop around the image but click at certain places to realign the cut.

The other two tools that were available to use were the lasso tool and the magnetic lasso tool. I did not use these tools because they would not have given me control over what areas I would want to cut out not giving me an accurate and professional look. The lasso tool allows you to select a big area so it get cut away from the background. The magnetic lasso tool automatically sticks to the area that you want to cut out but is not accurate enough to get into small details and crevices in the photo like gaps in the hair etc.

Photoshop : Scratched Image Repair

Before                                                                                   After

For this task we had to take a scratched image and repair it so there were no scratches left on the image. To do this I used the spot healing brush tool, healing brush tool and the patch tool. I used the spot healing brush tool first to get rid of all of the little white marks in the background of the photo and a few on his jacket. This tool worked well on these areas because it blends the background over the scratch so it blends into the photo and looks natural. The next tool I used was the healing brush tool, this tool copies colour from a part of the image that you hold the mouse over and press alt and then copies it to the place you want it to be to cover up a scratch or mark, I used this tool on the bigger patches of scratch as it covered the area better and made the colour even. The final tool I used was the patch tool, this tool lets you select an area and then it clones it so you can then drag it over the area you want to cover, I used this tool more so in the background as the colours stay the same most of the way through. I could use these tools on my magazine cover to cover up any scratches or mistakes in the photos to make the photo look professional.

Photoshop : Wrinkle fix

Before                                                                          After

For this task we had to subtly decrease the amount of wrinkles on this woman’s face. To do this I used spot healing tool on a high transparency so the wrinkles were not completely gone so they looked unnatural. First I made a new layer of the same image so I could see the difference I was making when I was using the tool. I then used the spot healing tool to fill in the depth of the wrinkles so they don't look as prominent.

Interview write up

For this first task we had to interview a classmate with a series of our own questions and then write it up into a interesting paragraph.
  • When's your birthday? My birthday is on the 31st of December which is fun as there is always a party going on.
  • What courses are you taking at college? and why? I am taking media, film and photography because they are all subjects I enjoy and are fun.
  • Do you have any hobbies? If so what are they? My hobbies are going to gigs, festivals and photography.
  • Why do you enjoy festivals so much? They are a good laugh, a fun experience and everyone there has similar interests.
  • Who is your favourite band? Paramore, I have seen them live three times.
  • Do you have any idols/people you look up to? Hayley Williams, I think what she believes in is right and she is creative and has cool hair.
  • What artist have you not seen play live but want to? Young Guns, I'm actually going to see them soon.
  • What is your favourite animal, and why? A Puffafish, because they are quite small but when they feel threatened they puff up, I don't puff up but I like to express my opinion and speak up.
Taylor was born on the 31st of December, which she has grown to love as there is always a party going on, obviously not at a young age as Taylor has sensible abilities but knows when the fun is needed. She is now studying at the Southend South Essex College taking the subjects media, film and photography as they are subjects she enjoys and finds fun, these subjects allow Taylors creative side to shine. Her hobbies outside of college include going to gigs and festivals and photography. Festivals are one of her favourite hobbies as they are a good laugh, a super fun experience and everyone there has similar interests, and I couldn't agree more being a regular festival and gig attender also. Her favourite band to listen to and hear rock out live is Paramore, seeing them three times you can clearly see the love for the band. Taylors idol is also Hayley Williams from Paramore, as what she believes in is right and she is creative and has cool hair. One artist she hasn't seen live but is dying to is Young Guns which she is going to see live soon. Taylors favourite animal as she states 'is a Puffafish because they are quite small but when they feel threatened they puff up, clearly you know I don't puff up that would be weird but I like to express my opinion and speak up'. This was a deep explanation, you know seeing we are in the ocean and all.
